What is an Artichoke?
**
**It is native to the Mediterranean coast and grows near the seaside.** The stems are 1.5 to 2 meters tall and resemble thistles.
The leaves are alternate and deeply lobed in a pinnate fashion. The upper surface of the leaves is green, while the underside is densely covered with cottony white hairs.
The flowers bloom in purple during the summer and are borne in capitula.
The capitula are 15 cm in diameter and consist of tubular flowers.
The bracts are spineless, and the bract segments are thick.
It prefers a mild climate, so in Korea, it can only survive the winter in the southern regions.
It can be easily cultivated along the southern coast or on Jeju Island.
Before the flowers bloom, the base of the bracts is cut off and eaten as a vegetable or used for canning.
