[From the Book]

Those with Dreams Do Not Age! Mind Massage by "Dream Uncle" Go Do-won, Who Makes Dreams Grow Again

I pondered deeply on what is needed for young people standing on the path of learning, especially for the youth of this era who must break through a difficult reality.

In 1807, about 200 years ago, a German university professor named Fichte delivered a lecture at the University of Berlin. The title was the famous "Address to the German Nation." I believe that day's lecture contains a message that is essential for our young people today as well.

In the 19th century, Germany was in a state of complete devastation, having been swept through by Napoleon's army. While our country is currently discussing difficulties such as economic crises and unemployment, Germany at that time was in a state of total ruin. The entire nation had turned to ashes, creating a precarious situation where the lives of every single citizen were pushed to the extreme. Amidst such despair, Professor Fichte rose up.

"In an age of despair, what is more important than building a few factories or reviving the economy is spirit and dreams."

This was the core message contained in Professor Fichte's lecture. The message was that one must possess not an ordinary spirit, but a ‘pure spirit,’ and not just an ordinary dream, but a ‘good dream.’

Some might describe this message as patriotism or love for one’s people, but the core message was precisely to ‘make German youth have dreams.’

I was a child who could not pack a lunch or wear proper socks, and who walked to school for over five hours a day—a round trip of 20 kilometers, or 50 ri—taking two and a half hours each way.

My first-grade homeroom teacher, Ms. Kwon Geum-sun, would send me on an errand to her house to fetch a lunchbox during lunchtime. When I arrived, her mother would be waiting for me, having prepared warm, white rice and delicious side dishes.
